I’ve moved my long run from Sunday to Friday this week, since I am going to be in Miami this weekend.
Oh, wait, did that just slip out? Oh, sorry. I’m not trying to rub it in. It will probably be super-boring just laying by the pool in South Beach all day on Saturday.
I’m going to do a good running deed. Really. I am going to cheer for a motley crew of extended-family running buddies at the ING Miami Marathon (and now, Half-Marathon) this weekend.
Which means: for Saturday a 7 mile run in shorts and a tank top, a slog through the crowded expo, and no drinking; and for Sunday cheering on thousands of marathoners starting at 6 AM. Friggin’ hardships, so don’t be jealous.
Frankly, I need a little bit of inspiration these days to get me through all of these workouts in the dark and the cold. Spectating is the fastest route to inspiration for me (Baby A I point to you specifically; I know you know exactly what I mean).
Oh. So. That’s why I’m running 14 tomorrow afternoon before my flight, so I can jump and cheer instead on Sunday morning.
Weather Comparison (I hate to rub it in):
Friday:
New York 42°F
Miami 72°F
Saturday:
New York 34°F
Miami 74°F
Sunday:
New York 26°F
Miami 73°F
Well, I for one would not trade the weather for anything.
I was on the phone today with a buddy of mine in Miami (I used to live down there) who’s running the half and I was rubbing into him that I get to run my Manhattan Half this weekend in non-swampy conditions. …Anyway, good luck on your long run tomorrow and enjoy the trip!
Cowboy, I ran the Manhattan Half last year. It is the most boring half-marathon ever. Two loops of Cenral Park?? I can do that for free any day of the year, with less crowds.
Just sayin’.
I love the HM course in Central Park. I’ve finished both at Tavern (Colon Cancer and Grete’s Gallop) and at 103rd (Manhattan Half). I like the rolling nature of the Park.
I love the rolling topography of the course, as well, but the thrill of racing that loop, after so many training runs, is long gone for me. Finishing the NYC Marathon through part of it was amazing, but the crowds and scale of the event make it something entirely different.
You know you’ve been running in cold temperatures too long when 29 degrees feels warm. Enjoy Florida!
I’ll be channeling your warmth while I freeze my tooshie off in the half on Sunday. The good news is that when it’s over there is 1 down and 4 to go! Say hi to the sun for me.
I’m happy for ya! Enjoy…
I agree with you on the HM course. For some reason, I guess the masses in Manhattan don’t like to travel, it is the biggest draw of the grand prix 5.
Manhattanites are notorious snobs of the other boroughs. Admittedly, I will only travel to Brooklyn to see my darling best friend; haven’t come up with any other reason good enough to go there. But I’m from Queens.
You a mean and spiteful woman!
Enjoy the sunshine!
As to the “boredom” factor, that to-each-his-own. I’ve done thousands of loops of the Park — I lived 50 yards away for 12 years — and scores of races but I never get bored with it. (In the old days, clockwise races ended at Tavern and counterclockwise (with a few exceptions) at 90th and Fifth. I loved that final mile, which began right at 72nd Street.)
Also, I always wave to the cat.
Because you’re not running the manhattan 1/2 this year, I will abstain as well. It wouldnt be the same without you.
[...] Pigtails Flying had a post that included references to racing in Central Park. I, of course, felt compelled to comment. Her point was that because she has trained so often in [...]
Hi,
I’ve been running in Central Park for the last ten years, every day. I am sometimes bored running when I run late in the evening in the middle of the winter and I just want to go home. Running on a treadmill is boring (I never do actually) unless I do a workout.
Being bored while racing doesn’t make any sense to me. if you run hard, you don’t really have time to look around… If you are bored, just push the pace !

[...] realized that I only had one more lap and then I was done. This was totally home field advantage. Some people might say that running a half marathon in Central Park is boring, but I can’t think of any [...]
Stephane, you have a point about if I’m bored I could push the pace. But, I kind of always do that in a race anyway.
