Just call me the Queen of the Three-Day Weekend. I can make all sorts of adventures work with just a Friday off. (Maybe I’m winking. Maybe I’m not!) For example, this Friday morning I fly to Denver to spend the weekend with Little Brother, his wifey and my niece and nephew. While there, I’ll run with Matt and hopefully drink with Eli… Then, the last weekend of February I’m heading to Florida for a spa night and some time with my dear auntie and uncle. This however, means I need to purchase a bikini. Luckily, I know a boutique where the shopgirls are helpful and the mirrors are kind… Lately I have been all cranky about Title 9 and Athleta. Is it just me or are they selling more dresses and cute tops than actual gear for seriously sweaty workouts? A Twitter friend suggested Dude Girl instead. What do you all think?…. Today I participated in DINE OUT FOR HAITI at Oceana. (Do you think that there is something slightly fucked up about eating oysters and fancy cuts of fish to help desperate and impoverished Haitians? I go back and forth on the matter)…. But I have also donated to a special, precious pearl of an orphanage in Haiti. I once visited the same mission’s home in Honduras and was blown away by their work. If you haven’t chipped in yet, or still want to do more, why don’t you donate to Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos? There are 350 beautiful children being raised there, most of whom are HIV+… OH and also Mary Wittenberg is pulling together a race for Haiti here in NYC on February 20th. I’m totally down with running for charity, being a TNTer and a TEAM FOXer… Some of you know of my adulation for and special cooking relationship with Nutella. You also know how I can’t make it out the door in the morning without half-a-pot of coffee. Well, this Neapolitan joint seems to have created my dream bevvie. Are we surprised it’s called “Coffee with a Kiss”? Even better: the caffe is inside a bookshop…. I will say it again: support your local independent retailer whenever you can. My favorite bookstore in New York City is Idlewild Books in Chelsea. Go there and buy something!… It’s the Millrose Games in Madison Square Garden this Friday but I can’t make it since I’ll be away on one of those aforementioned three-day weekends. If you’re in town, you should definitely go. Inspiring stuff to see these elites, college and high school athletes run the boards, like water swirling down a drain. Plus, you never know who you’ll meet… But if not, you can catch up on finish line vids of recent marathon and half-marathon debuts, like this one of Brett Gotcher’s 2:10:36 in Houston… I spend an awful lot of time eating out in Manhattan, because that’s where I work. But lemme tell ya kids, my working-class, immigrant-rich borough has some of the most authentic, affordable and delicious restaurants you will find anywhere. Edible Queens is a blog which has nobly undertaken the task of cataloging my borough’s dining surprises and pleasures. You can also follow them on Twitter (like I do)…
That’s awesome what you are doing for Haiti!
Dang. New York is so cool.
Have a safe trip!
On the topic of charitable events, the “Jenny Crain Make It Happen Benefit” is an opportunity to help a good cause and also score some unique stuff. One on-line auction item particularly caught my eye… Amy Begley is offering to host two people for a weekend in Portland to hang out her and other Oregon Project folks like Kara, Adam, Matt, Alberto. I’m afraid to bid since I might accidentally bid away my life savings to win that priceless experience (although I don’t need the flight or lodging for the trip). It is tempting though….
Dear Readers, I am not on Facebook for for those of you who are, you can find the online auction items for Jenny Crain here:
“There also will be a silent auction with great running products, apparel, and more. View and bid on these wonderful auction items (and become a fan) at: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Jenny-Crain-Make-it-Happen-Benefit/227019891628?ref=ts “
Nutella is my favorite food. It goes with almost everything. I recently discovered that it’s a fabulous addition to steel cut oatmeal. OMFG.
You mean: OMMFG, don’t you? (Add in “mother” after “my.”)
Mike went for a run today. Not a typo. I’m in PA and I jogged/walked just over a mile. It nearly killed me!
HOLY CRAP THAT’S SO AWESOME!! (Not the killing part, the run/walk part.)
