I had another death-defying run home from work tonight (aren’t all runs, on principle, death-defying?). When I left the office, my boss saw me heading out in my pigtails and said, “Is this your first run since the marathon?!” She sounded incredulous, and proud that I would be out there running again so soon (4 weeks after the event is soon?). When I explained that in fact, um, no I’d already run a half-marathon and several training runs, she started laughing, much in the same way sane people get nervous laughter when confronted with the truly insane, and there is no other appropriate response. I must say, her response was a little confusing to me, since she herself is an avid athlete, having played collegiate tennis, trained for and climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro, biked her way through multiple third-world countries, and completed several century rides.
But, I guess, it’s not half-bad if she thinks I’m crazy. It could explain away a lot of situations for which I’d otherwise have to invent elaborate backstories or excuses. 3.5 miles, 34:56. Weather: 43 degrees (felt like: 39 degrees).
