It’s December 31st, and so even though I’m tucked away at home, peevish with a head cold and sore throat, I still must face the reckoning. Did I meet my running goals for 2008?
1. Complete the Half-Marathon Grand Prix. CHECK!
Apparently, I will get a certificate and a gift sometime in February from the New York Road Runners. Cool.
- Manhattan 2:39:10
- Bronx 2:12:31
- Brooklyn 2:06:02
- Queens 1:53:34
- Staten Island 1:48:50
2. Run a sub-2-hour half-marathon. CHECK!
- See Queens & Staten Island, above.
3. Maintain a minimum Sunday long run distance of 8 miles. Nope.
I got a rough start, as January was basically marathon recovery. March, April and May, I remember, were killers at the office, and my running clearly suffered. In my running log, a lot of the entries read “Tired. Tight. Slow.” I cooked June through October, until I took November as another marathon recovery month. December’s been basebuilding, and until I got sick yesterday, I hadn’t missed a workout.
4. Finish the ING New York City Marathon in under 4:30. CHECK!
- How about, in under 4? How about, 3:54:41?
5. Qualify for the 2009 NYC Marathon. CHECK!
- And, my little brother got in through the lottery (he deferred his 2008 entry), so we’re going to be on the course together! Sweet!
Overall, I had an incredible year of running, and even though I didn’t meet Goal #3, I still made excellent improvement. Beyond these goals, I ran 1,235 miles, completed the Media Challenge Series and laid down a personal best time, integrated speed work into my training, launched this blog, and made some new friends. I’m ready to bid 2008 good bye, but only because I’m so psyched for Oh Nine. Bring it on.
Aha, I was wondering when we’d get something for completing the Grand Prix! I was starting to think they had screwed up and I missed it, and had calling NYRR on my to-do list.
Great job with the goals 🙂
2008 was a good year, indeed. I am honored to have shared at least 100 of those miles. (probably closer to 150) What do the ’09 goals entail?
Are we still closing ’08 with some frozen treats? New friends, indeed. I heart the TK! …..and am very glad to know I’m not the only Kara-watcher out there. 🙂
See you out on the course.
2008 was a great year for running and meeting new friends who share the same passion. I am so pleased to have met you and glad for your friendship as it keeps me motivated to run and blog.
Here’s to 2009 and seeing you in London and running “with” you in NYC – xxx
You put almost as many miles in your sneakers as I did in my little Saturn. You rock.
1235 miles?! Wow!! I think that the distance from our apt in Sunnyside to Sheboygan, Wisconsin
I am VERY proud of you!! I’m ok with #3, it means more late sleep ins on Sundays:)

Happy running 2009!.
